Nkwalini Zone Four Orphan Care Point

Nkwalini Genesis

1.0 BACKGROUND

The Nkwalini Zone Orphanage Care point is located in the outskirts of Mbabane approximately 5km away from the city centre. The Care point is under the Mbabane West Inkhundla under Ward 1 according to the City Council structure. The township has about 615 homesteads that have an average of 8-10 people per homestead. Most of the people who stay in this township are either non skilled or semi- skilled, that is why poverty is a common factor among the community members lives. The death rate is so very much high, that is why the executive committee felt duty bound to start this care point to try and assist the children who are orphans now. Some of them are double orphans whilst others and some of families are now child headed families. It is not easy to get foster parents for them.

Most parents die from HIV and AIDS related diseases. Our challenge is to assist the people who are doing home based care. There are people that we need to include in the feeding point those are taking ARV’s but we are not able to because the food is not enough. This is common in the community as these people do not have food. This is a big challenge that we are still working on to incorporate them.

1.1 OBJECTIVES

  • By 2010 we plan to give a basic educational skills to the kids and be able to  pay for their school fees in a higher learning institute.
  • Feeding them at most three times a day

1.2 OUR MISSION STATEMENT

“I was hungry you fed me, thirsty you gave me a drink; I was a stranger you received me in your home, naked you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me”.

 SHAPE  \* MERGEFORMAT

The above structure is doing well for the committee because the subcommittee meets with them to get progress. The meeting is to discuss success, failures and their challenges by the committees. Then it becomes easier for the committee to go to the relevant structures for advices and assistance of any kind.  It also promotes maximum participation and unity among the committee members.

2.2 STATISTICS

The committee has seriously gone home by home trying to assess the situation per homestead so that we have the correct figures of the people who are in need.

These were the findings

  • Female         70
  • Male             62
  • Double orphans           33
  • Single Parents             109

Their age ranges from 1 yr to 13 years old.

2.3 STRENGTH COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION

  • Bought a water tank that takes 1000 liters
  • Starting a small garden for vegetables
  • Getting fire wood for cooking
  • Providing security for the food of the orphans in the store room
  • Built one pit latrine toilet

2.4 WEAKNESSES

  • People do not attend meetings regularly
  • Lack of capacity to write project proposals, budgeting and networking with other people.
  • Marketing our project
  • The Main Committee finds it very difficult to keep records because there is no one running office for this project. We there fore think if we can have someone working full time we can overcome some of these challenges.

2.5 CHALLENGES

  • Inadequate cooking utensils
  •  Most of these children are not attending school if they are, they do not have someone to pay for their tuitions fees and they had to drop out.
  • Building a proper cooking kitchen and modern toilets
  • Donation for at least to give them two meals a day
  • It is not easy to get foster parents for the children
  • These orphans will be homeless soon as the City Council wants everyone to pay for the plot and the yearly rates.
  • We need some workshop for those in these sub committees (in order for them to understand what we are doing)
  • Fencing the area – (FAO is assisting us on this)

There is lack of funds for the following;

  • Proper toilets and kitchen
  • Open a bank account for the Care point E500.00 – once off
  • Children school fees and uniform
  • Fence for the area  - (FAO assisting us on this)

We request some donations for this project of caring for the children who are the future of this country. We guarantee that we will use your donation strictly on the project and only the needy children will benefit. We will report back to you because we believe you are now our friend. If you would like to visit the site of the project you are welcome.
